Aeroponics Farming

In Aeroponics Farming, the plants are processed to grow in an air or mist environment without using any kind of soil or an aggregate medium. This culture differs from conventional techniques of hydroponics, aquaponics. Hydroponic farming uses a nutrient solution as a growing medium in liquid form & minerals to sustain the growth of plants, whereas aquaponics fish waste or water. But this technique does not require any growing medium. However, water sometimes transmits nutrients. Aeroponics Farming is also a different type of Hydroponics.

Below is the list of corps is growing this new technology; which is an excellent example of the growth of Aeroponics Farming in the agriculture sector.

Vegetables:

Beets, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant, Grapes, Melons, Onions, Peas, Peppers, Potatoes, Radish, Raspberry, Strawberry, Sweet Potato, Tomatoes, Watermelon,

Herbs:

Basil,Chive,Cilantro,Dill,Garlic,Ginger,Lavender,Mint,Oregano,Parsley,Rosemary,Sage,Thyme

Types of Aeroponics Systems
Aeroponics Farming
Low-pressure Aeroponics (LPA)

This method is quite common among all 3 methods due to ease of set up, availability of components at any hydroponic or Aeroponics shop & its cost. In this method, water through sprinklers reaches around the root zone with the help of a pump.

High-pressure Aeroponics (HPA)

This is the most efficient method. In this method, the water converts and mix with the tiny droplets of 50 microns or less with atomizing. Which generates more oxygen for root zone than Low-pressure Aeroponics. However, this technique is quite costly then LPA.

Ultrasonic fogger Aeroponics (Fogponics)

As its name means, It’s the Ultrasonic Fogger System which helps in atomization of microdroplets of water of 5 to 30 µm. These droplets are so tiny that it looks like fog, such vegetables like tomatoes, grows very rapidly by Fogponics.

System Set-Up

Aeroponics Farming

In this technique, the plants are generally on the top of the reservoir with the help of a sealed container. Here, one should need to make an arrangement that supports the stem, such as a collar. But it must be stiff enough that it can hold the plant in an upright direction and keep roots in place and allow it to grow. The sprinkler system creates an atomized spray mixture contains nutrients, growth hormones, and water vapour from a rich solution of nutrients and sprays a haze in the reservoir which is engulfing and absorbed by the dangling plant. The spray provides a certain amount of mist that induces the plants to grow & allows it to develop. Here the timer is used which controls the duration and interval of supply. With this setup, the roots will be developed in a rapid manner and grow in a moist rich environment.

Benefits:

Aeroponics Farming

  • This technique reduces water usage by 98 per cent than conventional farming,
  • The use of fertilizer reduced by 60 per cent and pesticides by 100 per cent.
  • Reduction in risk of soil-borne diseases as the lack of soil provides maximum root aeration and keeps roots dry.
  • Seedlings become healthier & sustainable as they don’t droop or stretch while forming roots.
  • It makes harvesting easier, specifically for root crops. We can plant and harvest crops in the system throughout the year as it grows faster than conventional farming.
  • Considerably fewer maintenance requirements as the air act as a growing medium for plants.
  • As plants can easily absorb the oxygen as roots are directly in contact with an open environment. It results in a higher growth rate.
