Ergonomics : Quotidian Life Science

Our evolution journey from being an ape to modern human, we have continuously evaluating & developing ourselves over the generation. We have developed and transformed a room-sized computer to a handy smartphone and many more stuffs for the betterment of our livelihood and still improving it. But have you ever thought what is the factor behind the easy use of these? and the answer is Ergonomics : Quotidian Life Science behind our growth and evolution. Generally, the study of a person in his/her working environment is known as Ergonomics : a hidden Science behind our Quotidian Life. The main objective behind this branch of science is to eliminate the discomfort and risk of permanent injuries could occur while working.

International Ergonomics Association (I.E.A.)

Ergonomics : Quotidian Life Science

According to I.E.A. “This is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of the system. As well as a profession that applies theory, principles, data, & methods designed to optimize human well-being and overall system performance.”

Just think about the height of your desk or the angle of your computer monitor. At the end of the day, if you feel your eyes getting strained or your wrists hurt due to typing, then there should be the problem of lack of ergonomics. This branch of science helps to prevent these workplace injuries by adjusting your space according to your hand movements, your posture of sitting and seeing the screen on a repetitive basis. Not even the computer, the car, chair, a water tap, kitchen etc. The designing of each things we are using  in our daily life are based upon Ergonomics. In other words, as per International Ergonomics Association (I.E.A.), there are mainly 3 domains of specialization in ergonomics

Physical Ergonomics

Ergonomics : Quotidian Life Science

It is concerned with the entire human anatomy and bio-mechanical characteristic, as well as they relate to our physical activities. Physical ergonomics plays a vital role in designing our industrial and consumer products to optimizes the performance with minimal human efforts. This is to avoid fatigue or any other disorders related to work. From operating a computer keyboard to flying a giant plane, physical ergonomics plays a vital role.

Cognitive Ergonomics

Ergonomics : Quotidian Life Science

This type of domain is related to mental processes, such as memory, perception, reasoning. The main reason to consider cognitive domain is to provide the best user experience. Because they affect our interactions with the outer or inner elements of a system/surroundings including decision making, mental workload, work stress, training, skilled performance, human-computer interaction, as these may relate to human-system design.

Organizational Ergonomics

Here, to ensure employee job satisfaction by implementing the harmonized work system is the main purpose. This is done by taking some consideration such as human relationships, processes, and institutions. The major application of this type of domain is to organize Capacities, Integration, Functions, Capabilities of an employee or user.

Organization Work Place Google

On the international level, there are so many organizations works on the ergonomic studies and its effects on humans. I.E.A. a federation made of 52 individual organizations some of them are as under,

    • Human Factors and Ergonomics Society
    • Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors
    • National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
    • Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers
